Paul started working with In Pursuit Coaching with the goal of completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Cyclocross event 10 weeks later. An ex soldier in the army, cross country ski instructor and kayaker, Paul is no stranger to rigorous exercise and certainly has the determination to keep going even when the going gets tough but it had been a while since he had done anything with athletic demands quite like the 3 Peaks so recruited In Pursuit to make sure his fitness wouldn't let him down.
10 weeks isn't a long period of time for training so this took some careful consideration and planning to make sure Paul went into the event fitter than he was at the start of the process but without fatigue from training. The 3 Peaks presents a unique set of demands, a 38 mile course taking in the 3 highest peaks in Yorkshire (Ingleborough, Whernside and Phen-y-ghent) demands great endurance to keep going over several hours of racing, great strength to ride the bike off road up fells and the ability to get off, shoulder your bike and climb with it when it gets too steep to ride, a lot to do and learn in 10 weeks!
With the right training programme, incorporation of skills coaching and event specific training (climbing a lot of stairs with a bike on his back) we were left immensely proud when Paul took to his bike on the 25 September to make all the time cut offs and get over all 3 peaks and back to the finish line just in time to pick up a prize for being the Lantern Rouge, a sterling effort to keep going on a wet and windy day and demonstrate what can be achieved with a lot of determination and a well thought out plan.
Paul continues to work with In Pursuit on his next goal of completing the Paris Roubaix sportive in the spring, the training he has done so far should set him up to be successful again on the cobbles. He say's he doesn't plan to revisit the Peaks to better his time but we will see.....
